Understanding The 4'Cs: Clarity

Clarity in Lab Grown Diamonds:

Clarity is a fundamental attribute for both Lab Grown Diamonds and natural diamonds, reflecting the presence or absence of internal or external imperfections, often referred to as "inclusions" and "blemishes."

Grading Clarity:

Lab Grown Diamonds are graded for clarity using the same standardized scale as natural diamonds, ranging from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3). This scale helps assess the visibility and impact of these characteristics:

Flawless (FL): Lab Grown Diamonds and natural diamonds with a FL grade have no visible inclusions or blemishes under 10x magnification, making them exceedingly rare and valuable.

Internally Flawless (IF): These diamonds have no internal inclusions but may have minor surface blemishes that are undetectable without magnification.

Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2): Diamonds in this category have inclusions so minute that they are challenging to see even under 10x magnification.

Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2): These diamonds contain small inclusions that are only visible under 10x magnification and not to the naked eye. We feel this clarity is the best value vs price. For this reason most of the large diamonds we sell are VS1+ clarity.

Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2): Lab Grown Diamonds and natural diamonds in this category have noticeable inclusions under 10x magnification and may be slightly visible without magnification.

Included (I1, I2, and I3): These diamonds have inclusions that are visible to the naked eye and can affect their overall appearance.

Clarity Characteristics:

Both Lab Grown Diamonds and natural diamonds undergo growth processes that can result in clarity characteristics. While Lab Grown Diamonds share many clarity characteristics with natural diamonds, they may also possess unique features that are specific to their growth method. These subtle distinctions can often be discerned only under a high-powered microscope.

It's worth noting that the clarity grade of a diamond can significantly impact its value. Diamonds with higher clarity grades, such as Flawless or Internally Flawless, tend to be more valuable due to their rarity and purity. However, the presence of certain characteristics, when minimal and strategically positioned, can be a distinguishing feature and add character to the diamond.

In summary, clarity is a critical aspect of both Lab Grown Diamonds and natural diamonds, graded on a scale from Flawless to Included. While they may share common clarity characteristics, Lab Grown Diamonds may also exhibit unique features associated with their growth process. Understanding the clarity of a Lab Grown Diamond helps you appreciate its individuality and select a diamond that aligns with your preferences and budget.
